Helpful Calculations to Remember
• Power = force (N) x velocity (or thrust x TAS)
• Converting m/s into ft/min = x 200
• Converting ft/min into m/s = ÷ 200
• m into ft = ÷ 0.30
• KIAS into ft/min = x 101.3
• KIAS into ft/sec = x 0.514
• Converting KIAS into Kph = x 1852 ÷ 1000 (i.e. there are 1852 meters in 1 nautical mile and 1 KIAS is equal to 1 nautical mile per hour)
• Converting N in to KW (kilowatts) = N ÷ 0.734 (I KW is equal to 0.734 N)
• CL max = maximum lifting capability of a wing
• 1 Hp (horse power) = 745.6 W (Watt) note: 1000 W = 1 KW (Kilowatt)
• Power (in watts) = force (N) x distance (m) ÷ time (seconds)
• 1 statute (normal) mile = 5280 ft/2778m
• 1 nautical mile = 1 min of arc of the Earths great circle = 1852 m
• Conversion from nautical miles to statute miles = ÷ 1.5
• Conversion from statute miles to nautical miles = x 1.5
• Ground Track Speed (GTK) = airspeed + or - wind speed.
Time = distance ÷ speed
Distance = time ÷ speed
Speed = time ÷ distance
• potential energy = weight × height = 4000 × 2000 = 8 million N·m
• kinetic energy = ½mv² = ½ × 400 × 50 × 50 = 500 000 N·m
• momentum = mass × v = 400 × 50 = 20 000 kg·m/s
